The turmoil of his personal life having somewhat abated ('ich bin seit 3 Monathen durch einen Strudel von Verhltnissen und Schmerzen fast nicht zu mir selbst gekommen'), Heine is now a little more settled and able to concentrate on his legal studies, which must, of necessity, replace his poetical calling - 'Ich mu alles Poetische in mir zurckdrngen, um fr's liebe Brod zu sorgen' - although he still asks after the literary scene in Berlin and its reactions to him: 'Haben Sie ber meine Tragdien nichts gehrt?'.
