HEINE, Heinrich (1797-1856). Autograph letter signed ('H. Heine') to Joseph Lehmann, Lneburg, 16 December 1826, 2 pages, 4to, integral address panel (seal tear, wear to inner and outer margins, small modern label in upper left corner of first page).

Heine protests a recent burst of activity, as opposed to his customary idleness, as his reason for not having written, but thanks Lehmann for his friendship, and in particular the support he has given to the Reisebilder - in marked contrast to the reception it met with in Hamburg - 'Ich befand mich bey deren Erscheinen in Hamburg unter lauter Kothwrfen und recht benthigt des Ferne'. He discusses his increasingly disjointed relations with his Berlin friends, still with great affection, relates his plans for the next months - including the publication of the second part of the Reisebilder, and ends with a glance at his satiric method: 'Auf jeden Fall sollen Sie sehen, da ich frey und edel spreche und das Schlechte geile'.
