A friendly acknowledgement of a gift from an acquaintance, 'le joli ouvrage que vous m'avez envoy [...] je le trouve charmant et fait avec infiniment de gout'. The marriage of Josephine de Beauharnais to Napoleon Bonaparte, then First Consul, took place in 1796. In February 1800 Napoleon moved from the Palais du Luxembourg to the Tuileries, where Josephine is said to have been unhappy at the greater formality imposed upon her.
