Lot Essay
At the turn of the century the thatched house situated in West Horsley, Surrey, was occupied by two families, the Clarks and the Tyrrels. In 1912 the cottage was burnt down, when a fire broke out in the laundry situated in the garden shed. Some years later the land was sold and a semi-detached house was built on the site.
The same cottage was depicted in a watercolour of the same size, entitled Children by a cottage gate. The watercolour was sold at Christie's London, 13 December 1983, lot 194 (3,024).
We are grateful to Annabel Watts for suggesting an identification for the cottage depicted.
