Lot Essay

This composition follows that of a slightly larger watercolour dated 1924 which was offered at Sotheby's Belgravia on 7 May 1974, lot 134. That picture had the title Spring and Winter, although Stock often appended musical references to his titles, as in this instance. The figures of the female nudes in both watercolours are identical. A picture of the same title was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1909, no. 691.
