The picture was executed two years before Richards went to live in Newlyn, although it clearly shows the influence of other artists resident in that town. Despite having called the village 'a fishy and smelly and a somewhat lazy place' in the Studio (1895), Richards found that it provided him with ideal subject-matter for his genre painting and he stayed there from 1892 to 1897.
