The present work is from the series of pictures of bullrings and bullfighters that Ayrton produced in June 1939 on a trip to Nmes with John Minton and Michael Middleton. Here they witnessed bullfighting in the Roman amphitheatre and the subject became a familiar motif and employed even as a backdrop for still life painting, as in the present work.
