Ray Weight (loc. cit.) describes the present work: 'It is the substance of a dream, an outlandish Gothic setting with characters to match, preoccupied with their several curious concerns. The massses are immense and simplified and vigorously coloured. It is a favoured rhetoric of powerful, direct emphases sufficient to deliver the intended, physical shock'.
