Lot Essay

In the Royal Academy Exhibition Catalogue for 1962, Flint recorded executing the present work: 'One fine morning at Crest my companion knew, as became an Admiral, exactly what he wanted to paint while I had no idea. I got him settled, precariously, on the sloping river bank. Then I drove slowly along the little road on the south side of the Drme, spied this subject and got out and painted it'.
