Lot Essay

By 1903 Laura and Harold Knight were living at Staithes in North Yorkshire, having been attracted by the plein air painting and low-key range of colour used by the followers of Bastien Lepage who were painting in this area. Laura Knight considered that at Staithes 'I found myself and what I might do'.
(see C. Fox, Dame Laura Knight, Oxford, 1988, p.18).
