Lot Essay

This watercolour illustrates lines from Thomson's Seasons, which was first published in 1797 by T. Bentley for P.W. Tomkins and later in 1802 for F.J. Du Roveray: 'Young Celadon/and his Amelia were a matchless pair,/With equal virtue formed and equal grace,/The sum, distinguished by their sex alone'. (see H. Hammelmann and T.S.R. Boase, Book Illustrations in Eighteenth Century England, 1975, p. 49).
