Lot Essay

Grimm was employed under the patronage of Cornelius Heathcote Rodes of Barlborough Hall, Derbyshire from 1778, following his move to England in 1768. It is likely, given the close proximity of Hall and church, that the present wash drawing was executed whilst Grimm was working for Rodes. The Church of St Lawrence, Whitwell was of considerable architectural importance in Derbyshire for its contribution to the Norman style. (see N. Pevsner, The Buildings of England, Derbyshire, London, 1953, p. 242)
