Lot Essay

The present watercolour is an example of Boys' watercolour technique that came to the fore during the 1840's. There is very little underdrawing to define the details and the atmostphere is conveyed in broad wet washes. The technique can be compared to that employed in St Paul's from Lambeth dated 1844 (see J. Roundell, Thomas Shotter Boys, London, 1974, p. 166, no. 73, illustrated).

We are grateful to James Roundell for his help in preparing this catalogue entry.
