Nicholson exhibited views of Chester beteween 1810 and 1812. The Grosvenor Museum in Chester has a similar watercolour of this view, painted slightly closer to the river's edge.
The present view shows the tower of St. John the Baptist's Church to the right of the watercolour. In the early 19th century, a road called Skinner's Lane ran between the city walls and the river Dee and housed the workshops of animal skinners, an acid factory, several warehouses and small mills.
We are grateful to Peter Boughton and Fiona Salvesen of the Grosvenor Museum, Chester, for their help in preparing this catalogue entry.
