William Havell first visited Wales in the summer of 1802, where he met up with John and Cornelius Varley, and the architect Thomas Webster. The following year he returned to Wales again with a larger gathering of young artists including Joshua Cristall.
The scale of the landscape in the present watercolour and the treatment of the rivers and waterfalls has much in common with the work produced by Havell at this date, but the flatness of the washes and the schematic treatment of the escarpment in the upper left section of the composition is also reminiscent of John Varley, O.W.S.
