Varley made his first tour of Wales in 1798 or 1799 with the landscape painter George Arnald. This Welsh tour was enormously influential in laying the foundations of Varley's art and providing him with the inspiration and subject matter which he was to draw upon throughout his career.

A considerably later watercolour of 1839 (?) entitled Tal-y-Llyn with Cader Idris in the background is illustrated in C.M. Kauffman, John Varley/1778-1842, London, 1984, p. 167, no. 69.

Another version of the present watercolour measuring 12 x 22 in., is in the Nottingham Castle Museum (aquisition no. 54-33).
