Lot Essay

It has been suggested that this is a design for part of the decoration of the Sabine Room at Chatsworth. A design showing similar alcoves and cornice and cautiously associated with Chatsworth is in the Victoria & Albert Museum (Edgar Mayhew, Sketches by Thornhill in the Victoria and Albert Museum, 1967, pl. 5).
