Lot Essay

The present watercolour is a studio drawing, after Paul Sandby's composition. Two autograph versions of The Old Bridge at Windsor exist. One version is in the collection of Eton College, formerly in the collection of Mrs Anita Leslie King, removed from Castle Leslie, Glaslough, County Monaghan, and sold at Christie's London, 28 June 1963, lot 31. The second, squarer version (measuring 10.1/8 x 16.5/8 in.) is in the Victoria & Albert Museum (see L Herrmann, Paul and Thomas Sandby, London, 1986, p. 82, no. 4, illustrated).

The present drawing is closer to the Eton College version that measures 11 x 23 in. The main difference lies in the standing figure in the punt on the right of the composition.

The Victoria & Albert version is illustrated and discussed in F. Gibson, 'Paul and Thomas Sandby', The Studio, LXXII, 1918, and attributed to Thomas Sandby.
