Lot Essay

It has been suggested that the cottage depicted in the present watercolour was used for smoking fish. A watercolour study of lobster pots is in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, see D. Scrase Drawings and Watercolours by Peter de Wint, Cambridge, 1979, pl.16, cat.no. 31. Similar lobster pots are seen in his engraving of Ventnor, Isle of Wight in Cooke's Delineation of South East England, 1816.
