Lot Essay

These handsome, arrogant birds designed by Harold Stabler were made by Carter, Stabler & Adams, at Poole until the 1930s. A similar bird was exhibited in the Paris Exhibition of 1925. Carter & Co. of Poole, Dorset, established in 1873, was a leading manufacturer of architectural ceramics and tiles; its success and enlightened direction led to an ornamental ceramics department being added in the early years of the 20th century. The director of the company, Charles Carter, introduced Harold Stabler to the company; Stabler was an artist, designer and silversmith and he in turn introduced John Adams, a Staffordshire potter, to the group. In 1921 a new partnership was formed, Carter, Stabler & Adams, specifically to develop and expand the ornamental and domestic ceramics. The company achieved considerable success and continued until 1963, when the name was finally changed to Poole Pottery Ltd.
