The silvered dial signed John Carter Tooley Street London No. 183, Roman hour numerals, gold hour and minute hands, subsidiary seconds dial with blued steel hand and up-and-down dial with gold hand, main-frame assembly carrying reversed fusee, barrel and centre wheel, the top-plate inscribed John Carter, Tooley Street, London No. 183, sub-frame assembly carrying the remainder of the train and Earnshaw escapement, blued steel and brass cut bimetallic balance with segmental heat compensation weights, blued steel helical balance spring, spring foot detent with jewelled locking stone, brass bowl and gimbal, three-tier brass bound mahogany box (with restorations), the centre with inset bone disc, external brass drop handles

John Carter, an eminent 19th century chronometer maker was elected Lord Mayor of London in 1857 - the only chronometer maker to be so honoured. He is recorded at 207 Tooley Street 1829-1859.
