Lot Essay

We understand from the owner that this deckwatch was given to his maternal grandfather, Robert Kempston, by the railway magnate George Jay Gould between 1900-1914. Mr Kempston was a keen international racing yachtsman having crossed the Atlantic several times during this period and crewed on many famous yachts including the Shamrock. He knew various members of the New York Yacht Club including Mr Gould who gave him this watch as a token of their friendship.

Bailey, Banks & Biddle, Philadelphia, were agents for Patek Philippe & Co.
