The frosted gilt chain fusee movement with engraved cock and foot, three armed steel balance, diamond endstone and verge escapement, striking hours and quarters on a bell by depressing the pendant, the pierced inner case with painted enamel floral scene on translucent red enamel background with further polychrome enamel decoration and diamond set pendant, the intermediary case with polychrome enamel decoration and serpentine bezel, a painted maritime scene on translucent pink enamel on guilloche background, the outer case with polychrome enamel decoration and serpentine bezel, glazed to one cover, casemaker's mark AN possibly for Augustus Newman, dial and movement signed

Lot Essay

The sun in splendour mark was introduced by the London Assay Office on 29 May 1816 to denote 22 carat gold. This unusual mark, struck in addition to the sterling standard type marks, was used until the introduction of the separate crown and twenty-two punches in 1844.
