Lot Essay

This form of Roman tripod, with scrolled supports terminating in bacchic ram heads and hoof feet, reflects the elegant late 18th Century fashion promoted by the architect James Wyatt (d.1813) and by Geroge Richardson's New Designs for Vases and Tripods, 1793. There are a pair of related giltwood and bronzed stands at Holkham Hall, Norfolk (The Earl of Leicester, Holkham Hall, English Life Publications, 1996, p.12).
