Each with a later rectangular top above a plain frieze and a pair of brass trellis and glass panelled doors, enclosing two adjustable shelves, flanked by reeded volutes, with bobbin-turned mouldings, on bun feet, losses to the mouldings, one with Worthing depository label inscribed in pencil '67 Mrs H M Slade 14.7.49', restorations

Lot Essay

The cabinets, with their Egyptian reeded ornament and pilasters, embellished with voluted trusses at either end, and their stump feet, relate to a pair of bookcases supplied around 1805 for Penicuik House, Scotland and attributed to the Edinburgh firm of Young, Trotter and Hamilton (see F. Bamford, Dictionary of Edinburgh Furniture Makers, Leeds, 1983, pl.74).
