The cabinet relates to one on a stand, with similarly patterned frieze, attributed to Pierre Gole (d.1684) who was appointed Louis XIV's 'Maitre menuisier en ebene ordinaire' in 1656 (see V. Vinson 'Louis IV Marquetry Cabinets in The Reeves Collection', Dallas Museum of Art, Spring/Summer Bulletin, 1988, vol. 2, p.6). a related cabinet, also with chequer mosaic borders and an acanthus-handled vase was sold Etude Couturier Nicolay, Paris, 14 June 1996, lot 70.
