Lot Essay

The vase, of bacchic-krater form with lion-mask spout, stands on a Roman tripod-candelabrum base of embowed dolphins on a stepped plinth. It bears the mark of Thomas Messenger and Sons of Birmingham. The firm commenced as manufacturers of metal furniture mounts, and traded from 1826 as 'Manufacturers of Chandeliers, Tripods and Lamps, of every description in bronze and ormolu'.
