A related 'Double Chest of Drawers' pattern, as well as the Grecian-scrolled feet, feature in A. Hepplewhite & Co., The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, 1788 (pls. 53,54 and 87). This chest's fine quality mahogany is typical of Gillows furniture at this period, and this patterned foot appears in their 1790 Estimate Sketch Book (see L. Boynton (ed), Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, Royston, 1995, fig.154). The basic pattern for this 'chest upon chest' already featured in the 1786 Estimate Sketch Book of Gillows (21 December 1786, p. 476).
