Lot Essay

This cupboard relates to the strongly French-style work of S. Jamar, a French cabinet-maker of Wardour Street, who in 1818 advertised a range of furniture 'equal to any made in Paris'. Between 1819 and 1826 he was trading in Gerard Street, Soho, and described himself as 'Cabinet-Maker to Louis Bonaparte, King of Holland' (C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture, London, 1996, pp. 272-280).
