For the sitter see lot 11. Crookshank and the Knight of Glin suggest that this work, unlike the other, was executed in Florence, where the Rev. John Parkinson recorded meeting Dawkins on 13 December 1783; Hamilton moved with his family from Rome to Florence in October 1783, remaining there, apart from a short trip to Venice in 1784, until early 1786, when he returned to Rome.
Despite the fact that both the portraits of Dawkins, lots 11 and 12, were in the Christie's sale of 1913, Strickland only lists one of them, identified by a photograph in the Witt Library with this, the smaller example.
