Lot Essay
Dr. Vern Swanson, describes the present work as Godward's main exhibit of the Walker Gallery exhibition of Autumn, 1902, 'in which all the stops have been pulled. There is no demure sedateness here, only the artist blinding with his virtuosity'. (Swanson, op. cit., p. 71).
The picture closely relates to Ionian Dancing Girl (see fig. 1), an oil exhibited at the New Gallery of 1902, and illustrated on the cover of Dr. Swanson's catalogue raisonn of the artist (see also Swanson, loc. cit., p. 208, no. 9, pl. 48).
