Lot Essay

Dr. Vern Swanson, describes the present work as Godward's main exhibit of the Walker Gallery exhibition of Autumn, 1902, 'in which all the stops have been pulled. There is no demure sedateness here, only the artist blinding with his virtuosity'. (Swanson, op. cit., p. 71).
The picture closely relates to Ionian Dancing Girl (see fig. 1), an oil exhibited at the New Gallery of 1902, and illustrated on the cover of Dr. Swanson's catalogue raisonn of the artist (see also Swanson, loc. cit., p. 208, no. 9, pl. 48). Dr. Swanson suggests 'the painting showcases Godward's abilities in all the areas for which he is most noted, including draperies, flesh, marble, floral and Mediterranean landscape'. Ionian Dancing Girl, was sold at Christie's New York, 12 February 1998, lot 44 for $680,000.

For a short note on the artist, see the following lot.

We are grateful to Dr. Vern Grosvenor Swanson, of the Springville Museum, Utah, for his help in preparing this catalogue entry.
