The sitter was the daughter of Richard Bavand, of Chester (Mayor of that city in 1581) and his wife Jane, third and youngest daughter of Randulphe Bannvile, of Chester. She married Thomas Jones, of Shrewsbury, the first Lord Mayor of Shrewsbury (for whom see the previous lot). It has been suggested that in this portrait she may be attired in the costume of the wife of a Lord Mayor. The jewellery that she is wearing certainly identifies her as a woman of considerable social status.
