Lot Essay
Alexander Popham (1605-1669) was the son of Sir Francis Popham and his wife Anne, daughter and heiress of John Dudley of Stoke Newington. Popham sat as Member of Parliament for Bath in 1640 and succeeded to Littlecote on the death of his father in 1644. He was active on the side of Parliament during the Civil War and, after the death of King Charles I, was appointed a member of the Council of State. However, he voted in Parliament for the Restoration and entertained King Charles II at Littlecote in 1663. His wife Letitia was the daughter of William Carre, Groom of the Bedchamber to King James I. His daughter Essex, married John, 3rd Baron Poulett. Letitia married Sir Edward Seymour (1633-1708), Speaker of the House of Commons, and Anne married William Ashe.
