Lot Essay

Jan Looten was born in Amsterdam, but had settled in London by July 1662. He seems later to have moved to York, where he died. Four Landscapes attributed to him are in the Royal collection, two of which were probably painted for King James II, circa 1675 (see O. Millar, The Tudor, Stuart and Early Georgian pictures in the Collection of her Majesty the Queen, London, 1969, I, pp.155-156, nos. 413-416). we are grateful to Sir Oliver Millar for informing us that this picture was painted when the artist was in England and for pointing out that thestaffage is by Jan Wyck.
