This picture is based on a drawing by Canaletto in pen and ink with grey wash of circa 1754 (London, British Museum). The wooden 'Chinese' bridge by Hampton Court Palace was designed and constructed by Samuel Stevens and Benjamin Ludgator, and opened on 13 December 1753. The bridge has since been replaced several times: the present structure was designed by W.P. Robinson and Sir Edwin Lutyens and opened in 1933.
