This race, for a 200 sovereign cup, was run at Manchester on 22 November 1878. W.H. Shaw's Telescope, ridden by Snowden, and T. Jenning's Eccosais, ridden by Goater, were two of the best sprinters of the period. Telescope, who was victorious in nine out of his twenty races that year, won by 1 lengths.
