The soup-plate with a central gilt and iron-red coat-of-arms and coronet below an underglaze blue cell-pattern band in the well and a similar band at the rim divided by four triangular panels, the arms repeated at the border; the plate finely enamelled with butterflies and dragonflies encircling a floral bouquet at the centre, the well with a trellis-pattern band reserved with gilt floral cartouches and the border with an accoll coat-of-arms and coronet flanked by hounds below the foliate rim, rim hairlines and chips

The arms on the soup-plate are those of Sichterman, and probably Jan Albert Sichterman, who was a Director of the Dutch East India Company and Governor of Bengal from 1734-1744. At least two other services are known with these arms. The arms have been attributed to the French family of de Fouquet, whose arms are similar, and indeed the de Fouquet ancestrial home of Le Chteau de la Grange, in Manom, Lorraine has an extensive service with these arms, but the coronet is neither that of a French count nor a duke, but is very similar to a Dutch 'burggraaf'. A slightly larger plate from this service is in the British Museum, exhibited at The National Museum of History, Taipei, 1994, Catalogue, no.127, pp. 284 and 285. A large rectangular wall fountain, also from this service, was sold in our Monaco Rooms, 22 June, 1989, lot 86.

The arms on the plate are those of Cotlogon, of Brittany. The family used to own Place Vendme in Paris.
