The crest of a marten, a rebus of the name Martin, may indicate this service was made for the English merchant banking family of that name. See D.S. Howard, op.cit., 1974, p.335. The design is copied from a set of allegorical depictions of the seasons designed by C.P. Cipriani, engraved by Francesco Bartolozzi and published in August 1780. This design represents Autumn; a Chinese service with this crest but with a design representing Summer is also known to have been made, of which several pieces are recorded, and it may well be that a further two services, with Spring and Winter, were commissioned, but there are no pieces remaining to substantiate this.
