A GRISAILLE, SEPIA AND GILT ARMORIAL 'MARRIAGE' PLATE
circa 1740
Finely decorated at the centre with a joyous marriage scene in a grand architectural setting, below an arch inscribed SEMPER AMOR PRO TE FIRMISSIMUS ATQUE FIDELIS, the columns at either side each surmounted by a small coat-of-arms, the border gilt with a Meissen-style floral band

The arms are those of Nicholas Geelvinck, who later became Mayor of Amsterdam, and Johanna Jacoba Graafland; they married in 1729. This decoration appears on at least six known armorial services, all made for Dutch families. It has been suggested that the scene derives from a seventeenth century book frontispiece; see D. Howard and J. Ayers, op.cit., 1978, vol.II, p.394 and no.391 for a very similar plate to the present lot. However E. Gordon states "the title page of an eighteenth century wedding song is the known source for the scene"; see Collecting Chinese Export Porcelain, 1978, p.66, where a similar plate with different arms are illustrated as fig.52. See also F. and N. Hervout and Y. Bruneau, op.cit., 1986, fig.13.87, p.316, where the authors explain that the allegorical scene depicts the wedding of Junon and Hymen with Ceres to the right, Prudence or Wisdom to the left and Neptune in the foreground.
