Lot Essay

The design on this plate is copying an engraving by Larmessin, after Lancret. The scene depicts La Servante justifie, from a fable by de la Fontaine, directly inspired by a story written by the Queen of Navarre. See F. and N. Hervout and Yves Bruneau, op.cit., 1986, colour plate 9.10 where a very similar plate is illustrated.
