A LARGE LACQUER TRAY
MEIJI PERIOD (Late 19th Century)
Of rectangular form, decorated in gold, silver and coloured hiramaki-e, takamaki-e, gold dust and foil, shell, coral and ivory inlay, the centre with the takarabune [treasure ship], its figurehead formed as an impressive phoenix, carrying the Seven Gods of Good Fortune and a cargo of treasures on a turbulent sea, cranes flying above them and the horizon with a setting sun, the sail and the border of the tray decorated in many different brocade patterns, the reverse with a flock of flying cranes on a black polished surface, some old wear and slight chips
