Lot Essay
Jacob Spin was born and died in Amsterdam, Holland. As a sailor, it is known that he visited Batavia, the Mediterranean and the West Indies between 1824 and 1846, and may have travelled on one of the ships to Nagasaki. The majority of his work was done in watercolour and after 1846 he mainly painted ships, many of which were commissioned by Captains and merchants [see 1 below].
Spin's work can be found in the Nederlands Scheepvaartmuseum, Amsterdam the Prins Hendrik Museum in Rotterdam and in the museums of Deventer and Dordrecht. The Peabody Museum of Salem, USA, has several watercolours depicting ships dated 1843, 1845 and 1855.
The fregate Amboina was put to sea from the 'Land van Belofte' wharf in Rotterdam in 1840. She weighed 722 tons and was owned by the shippers A. van Hoboken & Sons from the same city. The Amboina's first captain was D. Charlau and his successor who sailed with her between 1842 and 1848 was J. Louwerse. In 1857 she was in Batavia and in 1859 she was sold due to damage for 14,000 Dutch guilders [see 2 below].
