A Set of Imari Cups and Saucers
Edo Period (Early 18th Century)
Decorated in iron-red, green, yellow and black enamels and gilt on underglaze blue, the central roundel with farmers and an ox in a rice field, mountains beyond, surrounded by a rocky landscape with pine, beneath it a riverscape with two men having a pic-nic, a large bottle with initials FW inscribed on it and a man in a boat being punted on the river, the rim with a geometric design, the reverse with sprays of stylised plum, the cups similarly decorated to the exterior, the centre with a spray of flowering cherry blossom, gilt rims
