A simple black lacquered iron mask of briefest form, the outside of the mask has a raised horizontal ridge overlaid in five places by shaped iron plates secured by zaboshi [rivets with small washers at the base] and having helmet cord hooks on each cheek, the interior lacquered black, the lower edge wrapped in doe skin

The earliest examples of these masks were made in two pieces joined horizontally and held by riveted plates, later examples have the join indicated by an applied strip.
