Muromachi Period (Late 15th/Early 16th Century)
The large iron mask is modelled on the shishiguchi-men used in the noh drama hyakkyo, black lacquered overall with the eyebrows, moustache and beard indicated with thin strokes of silvered lacquer, the eyeballs of gilded metal with pierced pupils, the mouth with gilded metal teeth, the canines extended, in profile the bulbous eyes, bold nose and extended jaw giving it a dramatic appearance, the interior heavily lacquered in red, the throat defence of two lames of true lamellae black lacquered and laced with dark blue spaced lacing and joined to the mask by a broad band of doeskin
