Signed Miochin Nobuiye and kao, and Dated Tenbun 8 [1539], Muromachi Period (First Half 16th Century)
The thirty-two plate russet iron Suji Bachi bowl with russet iron peak and haraidate, the plates and haraidate inlaid [zogan] with silver tendrils whilst the peak has dragons, the tehen kanamono of six stages in copper with a silvered kasajirushi no kan to the rear, the front and back plates of the bowl are piereced indicating that the helmet was fitted with shinodare at one time, inside the front plate is the invocation Hachiman dai bosatsu [Hachiman, war Buddha], the associated three plate russet iron ichi manju neckguard decorated with clouds in silver nunome zogan laced with kon ito sugake odoshi with murasaki hishinui, fukigayeshi overlaid with an iron plate leather covered with a gilt mon [badge]

Although Nobuiye was noted mostly for his sixty-two plate bowls, he was known to have made them with sixteen and thirty-two plates, this bowl conforms to most of the recognised features expected of this smith. As one would expect with a bowl of this age, it shows signs of being mounted a number of times.
