A FINE HORSE ARMOUR [BAGAI] WITH MASK [BAMEN]
Edo Period (17th Century)
The horse armour made in two sections, one to protect the neck and the shoulders, the other for the croup, flank and thighs, each section constructed of small rectangular pressed leather pieces lacquered gold and stitched to a fabric backing, with a coloured cross badge on each sides; the bamen [chamfron] of a stylised horse face decorated in black and gold textured lacquered wood, the conical ears and proeminent eyes in red, black and gold lacquer, the mane of horse hair, dark blue lacing, with a certificate from The Institute of Japanese Armour Research and Conservation dated 1975 stating that this armour is a very important example
