Lewis visited the city of Brussa - modern day Bursa - in 1841, during his almost year long sojourn in Turkey. The present work is one of a small number he is known to have executed there, two of which, both depicting the city's mosque, are in the Paul Mellon Collection.
Situated some hundred miles to the south of Constantinople, Brussa was founded as a city in the second century BC by Prusias I, although legend tells that it was Hannibal who helped him choose the site of the acropolis. In Roman and Byzantine times the city's natural hot springs and silk industry brought it wealth, before it fell to the Ottomans in 1326 and was established by Orhan as his capital, thus ushering in a second golden age.
