probably Hanau, with the Austro-Hungarian gold mark for foreign works 1891-1901, struck with inventory number 3694
Cartouche-shaped box, the baluster sides and base engraved with foliage and scrolls, the cover centred by an oval frosted gold reserve applied with a rose-cut and old-cut diamond-set cypher of Emperor Francis Joseph I of Austria (1830-1916) surrounded by two rose-cut diamond borders, on a gold ground cast with scrolling foliage applied with six silver-mounted diamonds

Provenance
According to an old label inside, 'this box was a Present from Francis Joseph, Emperor of Austria to the youngest of the Czars daughters in the year before the war, it was brought away from Russia by an aunt of the Princess, one of the few of the Royal Family who was fortunate enough to escape the terrors of the Revolution. The Emperor's initials, surmounted by the Imperial crown, will be noted on the cover'.
