A VERY FINE SAXON JEWELLED HARDSTONE AND GOLD SNUFF-BOX

Octagonal box, the cover applied with an oval portrait miniature depicting Holy Roman Emperor Francis II (1768-1835) as a young man in white uniform, wearing the jewel of the Order of the Golden Fleece, the sashes of the Austrian Military Order of Maria-Theresia and the Royal Hungarian Order of St Stephen, within a old-cut diamond border, the octagonal cover and base panels inlaid with a Zellenmosaik of striated brown and red agate plaques shaped as petals, concentrically radiating and swirling on a semi-translucent green ground, within borders of cream-coloured agate sticks, the four long sides of the base centred by oval rosettes inlaid with striated green and orange agate panels radiating from a carnelian ovolo, the lower end of the sides inlaid with diagonally cut carnelian sticks and an engraved gold band, the polished gold borders of lid, sides and base inlaid with a ribbon-twist band of carnelians centred by sky-blue and yellow glass flowerheads
